The estimated population is 8 million of which 60 % below 25.

Because of the strong urbanistic process suffered in the country during the last years, 64% of the population lives in the main cities of the island: Santo Domingo, with 3.166.000 inhabitants, and Santiago de los Caballeros, with about 1.289.000 inhabitants.

Population increase rate: 2,2%. It is a young population.

Active population: 2,3 million. Distribution by sectors: 49% in the sector of agriculture, 33% in the sector of services and 18% in the trade sector.
